More than half all Americans experience pain, with 20-30% of these people suffering from orofacial pain. As therapists we need to manage the pain as well as addressi the etiology in order to bring about the best outcome. Pain medication, OTC and prescribed, is standard treatment protocol which over time has caused widespread drug dependence and abuse. The number of drug overdose deaths has quadrupled since 1999, with over 70% of those deaths involving an opioid. An integrative approach is essential, including PBMT, Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), chiropractic and osteopathic medicine etc. PBM, or PhotoBioModulation treatment, a therapeutic form of red and infrared light therapy, increases healing efficiency, including reduction of inflammation and faster muscle recovery. Acupuncture, a complimentary pain management modality, stimulates neurological responses including endorphin release and by activating the meridian channel, reversing stagnation (pain) and increasing the flow of vital energy. Meridian mapping techniques, the identification of correlating meridian points and anatomical landmarks, will be discussed.
Dr. Grace Sun is considered an expert in many areas of dentistry, including the application of acupuncture with Photobiomodulation Therapy (also known as low level laser) as an effective, non-opioid pain management strategy when treating patients with orofacial pain. During this course, Dr. Sun will demonstrate how to treat orofacial pain using Photobiomodulation Therapy a painless no-needle alternative to acupuncture using Red and IR light by activating chi vessels via meridian points on orofacial muscular and jaw systems. Red and IR light can activate chi vessels via meridian points. The three wavelengths discussed will be 660nm 850nm and 940nm, penetrating deep into the tissue, the muscle, the nerves and bone to stimulate mitochondria within each cell, increasing ATP production, resulting in more efficient and pain relieving cellular function. In addition, guest speaker, Dr. Chianni Lin, an oriental medicine doctor and acupuncture specialist, will explain the history and background of acupuncture as Traditional Chinese medicine, and acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body.
