COURSE SUMMARY: This program aims to discuss new dental literature on the prophylactic and therapeutic use of antibiotics to guide dentists to make appropriate antibiotic decisions. Dentists prescribe approximately 10% of all outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in the United States (US), writing more than 25.7 million prescriptions per year. Dentists not only prescribe a significant proportion of antibiotics, but dentists are also the top prescribers of clindamycin in the United States, which is the most common antibiotic to cause Clostridium difficile infections. Over 80% of antibiotics prescribed by dentists for prophylaxis have been found to be unnecessary. Dental antibiotic prescriptions for therapeutic use are frequently written for durations of 7, 10, and 14 days with little data to support the prolong durations. Conflicting scientific evidence, lack of evidence, fear of lawsuits and lack of new information on antibiotic risks are factors that contribute to inappropriate antibiotic use. The overuse and misuse ofantibiotics in dentistry contributes to antibiotic resistance, costs and patient harm.
Review new guidance on the use of clindamycin and quinolones
Discuss 5 antibiotic practice changes dentists should make
Describe the prevalence of antibiotic resistance and its impact on dental patients
Analyze new studies that evaluate dental antibiotic use for prophylaxis and treatment
Define the role of dentists in dental antibiotic stewardship based on the ADA endorsement of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for dentists.
