COURSE SUMMARY: Tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) are a common yet often overlooked condition
that can negatively affect oral health and quality of life. Frequently associated with persistent
halitosis, patients may also experience throat discomfort, a foreign body sensation, difficulty
swallowing, and recurrent irritation. Dental professionals are often the first to recognize these
signs during routine oral examinations, making early identification and patient education
essential. This course provides an evidence based overview of the causes, clinical presentation,
diagnosis, prevention, and management of tonsil stones. Participants will learn about the role
of oral biofilm, bacterial accumulation, and oral hygiene in tonsillolith formation, along with
practical approaches to patient education, conservative management, and long term
prevention within everyday dental practice.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Describe the etiology, risk factors, and clinical presentation of tonsil stones.

Recognize the role of oral biofilm and bacterial accumulation in tonsillolith formation.

Identify evidence based methods for diagnosing and managing tonsil stones in dental
