COURSE SUMMARY:  Is there any secret about why intra-oral cameras are all the rage in dentistry? Of course not. We've all seen the benefits of “showing versus telling” for restorative dental needs. This course will show how a phase-contrast microscope is an intra-oral camera for periodontal disease. Phase- contrast microscopes have come a long way since the 80’s. From the ease of use, price point, and now 4K live video, seeing really is believing! The slithery motion of pathogenic bacteria not only grabs our patient’s attention, but it also gives us the ability to show versus tell them what is causing their gingivitis, or periodontal disease. This interactive and objective tool enhances the clinician’s and patient’s understanding of the infection, allowing for better and more personalized treatment options.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Recognize the role of biofilm in periodontal disease.

  2. Identify the difference between a high risk and low risk plaque (aka biofilm) samples.

  3. Understand the key players in the mouth-body connection, and their role in causing periodontal and systemic diseases.

  4. Appreciate how a hygiene microscope aids in the shift from a mechanical model to a medical model in dentistry.
